SUGAR
JONES
The Push
Austin
Arena magazine, April 1995
Sly
Stone meets Chicago meets Joe Jackson. Funky, driven horn arrangements
add a distinctive flavor to this surprisingly strong first effort
. . . but not so surprising, really, considering the players.
Elias
Haslinger (tenor & soprano sax), Chris Womack (tenor sax), Miles
Sapp (guitar), Alan Uribe (bass & Wonder Bass), Felix Hendrickson
(drums), Shane Pitsch (trumpets), Todd Yukomoto (baritone sax),
Mike Urdy (percussion) and singer/songwriter Chad Thevenot.
Chad
and Miles share most of the songwriting duties, and take production
and arrangement credits, the latter being a real accomplishment,
as the horn arrangements and solos are impeccable. Thought-provoking
songs of love and love lost, race, compassion, introspection and
violence, contribute a worldly consciousness to this colorful frontispiece
of words and music.
