Sugar
Jones: At the Metro Cafe

Louisiana
transplant Chad Thevenot, with his band Sugar Jones, appears at
the Metro Cafe May 16 for a funk-laced, pop-rock-infused show.
The
twenty-something bandleader moved to the metro area in 1996 after
spending several years in Austin -- an experience that left him
with “no confidence and no joy in the music.” “I
was completely ignored," he recalls. "No one was listening
or even interested. It made me quit playing -- I mean completely
for three years.”
He
moved here “just for the summer, just to feel out the scene,”
and through what he calls “an incredible event of serendipity”
found a job at a drug policy reform organization.
The
promise of a fresh start and a means of support encouraged Thevenot
to call Washington home. It took several years for “that musical
itch” to return, but it did. In mid-2001 he released his second
Sugar Jones CD, a studio project titled “Bring Your Own Insanity,”
which included Meters bassist George Porter Jr.
The
next step was to assemble a band -- something he accomplished rather
quickly. Then the band Sugar Jones made its way along the U Street
corridor's many clubs, most recently appearing during the Crosstown
Jam held at the Millennium Arts Center. Thevenot's onstage presence
had a distinct confidence. He says he feels rejuvenated, and his
performance certainly channels the excitement found in re-birth.
In
Texas “I felt unbelievably alienated and ineffective. I became
disillusioned and let go without a doubt. When it came back -- the
music -- it was in its purest form: playful. Because I’m having
fun, I feel so uninhibited. . . . This is just what comes out.”
"A
Chemical Dream" and "You Must Be Heaven" from the
"Bring Your Own Insanity" CD are on the Sugar Jones MP3
page. The group can also be seen May 24 at Lewie's in Bethesda. |
